DIY wellness products to boost your mood

When we're caught up in our busy lives, prioritising our wellbeing can often take a backseat. However, taking care of our mental and physical health is crucial for living a happy and balanced life. One way to do this is by introducing wellness products into our self-care routine. The best thing is that we can quite easily make them ourselves. Not only can these products be cost-effective and customisable, but they also allow you to take control of your mental and physical wellbeing.

1. Self-care boxes: a little luxury

Self-care boxes are a great way to treat yourself to a little luxury and relaxation. By creating your own self-care box, you can tailor it to your specific needs and preferences. Here's what you'll need:

- A box or container (this could be a wooden crate, a basket or even a decorative tin)

- A selection of self-care goodies (such as face masks, scented candles, bath salts and cosy socks)

- A personal message or affirmation

To create your self-care box, simply fill your chosen container with your favourite treats. You could include items like:

- A lavender eye mask to help you relax

- A set of scented essential oils to promote calm and wellbeing

- A face mask or scrub to nourish and moisturise your skin

- A pair of socks to keep your feet warm and snug

- A good book or magazine to take your mind off the stresses of everyday life

Once you've filled your box, take some time to enjoy the contents. Light some candles, put on some soothing music and indulge in a little 'me-time'.

2. Gratitude journals: focusing on the positive

Gratitude journals are a powerful tool for creating a positive mindset and improving our overall wellbeing. By taking the time to reflect on the things we're grateful for, we can shift our focus away from stress and anxiety and towards the good things in life. Here's how to create your own gratitude journal:

- Choose a notebook or journal that feels special to you

- Set aside a few minutes each day to write down three things you're grateful for

- Reflect on why these things are important to you and how they've made you feel

You could also add some prompts or inspiration to your journal to help get you started. For example:

- What are you looking forward to today?

- What's the best thing that's happened to you this week?

- What are you proud of yourself for?

By focusing on the positive and practising gratitude, you can start to shift your mindset. A study referenced by the National Library of Medicine explored “gratitude and wellbeing in the context of personality style”. In this study, gratitude was most strongly correlated with personality attributes related to wellbeing, and the researchers concluded that gratitude has a unique relationship with life satisfaction.

3. Essential oil blends: the power of nature

Essential oils are a natural way to promote relaxation, reduce stress and boost our mood. By creating your own essential oil blends, you can enhance your mood by using scents that you love. Here are a few blends to get you started:

- Relaxation Blend: Combine 2 drops of lavender oil, 2 drops of chamomile oil and 1 drop of bergamot oil to help calm and soothe your mind and body.

- Energy Boost: Combine 2 drops of peppermint oil, 2 drops of eucalyptus oil and 1 drop of rosemary oil for an invigorating blend designed to refresh your senses.

- Mood Boost: Combine 2 drops of geranium oil, 2 drops of bergamot oil and 1 drop of ylang-ylang oil. This blend can help to uplift and balance your mood.

To use your essential oil blends, simply add a few drops to a diffuser, add them to a hot bath or use them as a massage oil.

4. Creativity box: unleashing your inner artist

Creativity is a powerful way to express ourselves and tap into our imagination. By creating a creativity box, you can provide yourself with a space to explore your artistic side and unleash your inner creativity. Here's what you'll need:

- A large box or container

- A selection of art supplies such as paints, markers, coloured pencils and paper/canvas

- A prompt or inspiration

To use your creativity box, simply choose a medium and start creating. You could draw, paint, write poetry or even create a collage. The most important thing is to let your imagination run wild and have fun.

5. Mindful moment cards: taking a deep breath

Mindful moment cards are a great way to take a deep breath and focus on the present moment. The cards can help reduce stress and increase self-awareness. What you'll need:

- A set of cards or paper

- Markers or coloured pens

- Scissors

- Pen or pencil

- Inspirational quotes or prompts

Decide on a theme for your cards, such as breathing exercises, meditations or gratitude prompts. Design your cards, write a message or prompt on each and pick one or several out at random and follow the prompts.

These are just a handful of ways you can turn everyday items into powerful tools for maintaining wellbeing. In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, it’s heartening to know that we don’t necessarily need to break the bank to add a slice of self-care in our day-to-day.
